With the increasingly prominent global energy problem, the use of new technologies to reduce the electrical energy consumed by computer room cooling and the construction of green environmental protection data centers have become the core concerns of data center industry builders.
 

  1, Current data center status

  There are more than 400,000 existing data centers in China. Most of the data centers have serious power consumption. The PUE value is generally above 2 and it is imperative to reduce the PUE value.
 

  The data center cooling system has been using machine room-specific precision air conditioners as its main refrigeration equipment for many years. In addition to the IT equipment in the data center, most of the power in the data center is consumed by the cooling system in the computer room. Although the energy efficiency ratio of precision air-conditioning refrigeration in the computer room has improved, the power consumption is still high.
 

  2, Data Center Energy Consumption

  Use the energy efficiency of the data center to measure whether the data center is energy efficient.
 

  Data center energy consumption mainly includes the energy consumption of IT equipment and the energy consumption of infrastructure and environment required to maintain the operation of IT equipment. If the PUE is 2, the 1kw IT equipment needs 1kw of infrastructure and environmental power consumption to meet the normal operation of the IT equipment. The reduction of 1kw of energy consumption by IT equipment is equivalent to the reduction of 2kw of energy consumption in the equipment room. . Therefore, energy saving of IT equipment is an effective way to reduce the entire data center. It is recommended to use Energy Star certified IT products.
 

  The cooling system of the data center is also a system with large energy consumption. Reducing the energy consumption of the cooling system can significantly reduce the PUE value of the data center. It is the most concerned part of the industry in the green energy saving design of the data center.
 

  The efficiency of the UPS system also has a certain impact on the PUE. Selecting high-efficiency products can also improve the PUE of the machine room.
 

  The DC power supply system of IT equipment reduces the power efficiency reduced by the AC / DC system conversion of the UPS system, and is now also used by some large IT computer rooms.
 

  3. Energy-saving measures for data centers

  The energy conservation of data centers has attracted more and more attention. Various green energy-saving data center technologies have been applied and promoted. The following measures can effectively save the energy consumption of data centers.
 

  1) Increase the temperature of the data center
 

  Data centers generally over-cool and waste energy, which can increase the temperature of the equipment room;
 

  In general, we control the computer-room airhandling (CRAH) intake air temperature to 22 ° C. Excessive cooling of data center systems can result in significant waste of power and money. Excessive cooling of the data center far exceeds the actual cooling requirement of -27 ° C, which is lower than the recommended standard of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (hereinafter referred to as ASHRAE). The recommended intake temperature for high-end equipment is from 25 ° C to 27 ° C.
 

  2) Shut down unused servers

  Virtualization technology shows the energy-saving advantages obtained by integrating unused processors, hard drives and memory.
 

  IBM also introduced a product called ActiveEnergyManager, which is an upgraded version of IBMSystemsDirector that adds energy control options to improve performance per watt by reducing the processor clock frequency or letting the processor sleep while the server is idle.
 

  Some companies can already use software to shut down components of a server. Introduced a new product, this software can turn off different parts of the server: for example, you can turn off the disks, the central processing unit, and the memory modules and fans keep working.
 

  VMware also added a feature called Distributed Power Management in VMware Infrastructure 3.5 to try to shut down and turn on the server. This software is designed to meet the needs of the service, it can automatically shut down the server that is not currently needed, and automatically turn on the server when the demand for computing resources increases.
 

  3) Use free external air cooling

  The design scheme of the "chilled water air conditioner" unit with natural cooling source is used: At this time, a cold water host with "natural cooling function" is configured at the front of the air conditioning system, and a "chilled water" air conditioner is selected at the indoor cooling end of the air conditioning system unit.
 

  A higher data center temperature can help users make better use of secondary energy-saving technologies, a free air cooling method that uses lower outside air temperature as a cold air source for cooling, and can pass outside air through air filters, moisture removal devices, Fire barriers and temperature sensors are introduced into the data center to ensure the cooling of the internal air. Make sure that the outside is not clean air and will not damage sensitive electronic components.
 

  This method may require frequent filter replacement, so the cost of a clean, reusable filter must be considered. The direct introduction of air also brings problems in air cleanliness. The solution can be the following way.
 

  The data center with rotary air conditioner can solve this problem well. Outdoor and indoor air are two different circulation channels. Outdoor air does not directly enter the room, so the harm of outdoor unclean air is reduced.
 

  4) Using data center heat to heat office area

  The data center can heat the office area free of charge. Collecting the heat generated by the equipment inside the data center to heat the office space in winter can save a certain amount of energy consumption costs.
 

  5) Use DC power in large data centers

  The server uses DC power, so directly supplying power to the server can eliminate the reduced power efficiency of the AC to DC conversion completed by the server's internal power supply.
 

  6) Optimization of airflow organization in computer room

  In the data center computer room, construct cold aisles and hot aisles, and configure precision air conditioners for the fan room. By regulating the airflow organization in the data center, the utilization of cooling capacity is improved.
 

  4. Cloud computing has changed the traditional data center

  China's national plan for cloud industry development states that after three years, the annual output value of "cloud computing" will reach 200 billion yuan, of which the IaaS market will account for 15 billion yuan. The large-scale construction of cloud infrastructure is mainly divided into: large-scale SaaS system support; private public cloud data room; college computing and data centers; government agencies and government cloud construction; data storage (sensing and monitoring) of IoT applications.
 

  The surge in cloud computing and IT consumption has led to an increase in data center demand. Because of this, data center administrators are constantly working to find ways to improve performance, increase infrastructure density, and increase multi-tenant capabilities. As more and more integrated applications enter the data center, to maintain a high level of service, data center infrastructure optimization is critical. Hybrid cloud platforms are becoming more and more popular with customers. Integrating a cloud model is a good way to improve data center efficiency, which is why many users are expanding their data centers to the cloud. The competition in data center space has brought new products to everyone, better prices and more available resources, which also means that it is easier to create intelligent links between private and public cloud environments. Data center management can now span many different cloud models. Managers don't worry too much about physical infrastructure. They are more concerned about the workload running directly on it. This data center optimization method only needs to set up a basic infrastructure environment.
